April 3 , 2009 -- A focus on safety initiated by Lagina Plumbing several years ago continues to be reflected in its declining worker’s compensation costs. The “mod rate” used to determine the worker’s compensation costs for the company has gone down for the fourth year in a row, and is among the lowest among similar companies in the area.
The company has a formal safety program and maintains a daily focus on safety.
“We made a serious commitment to safety five years ago,” said Jim Lagina, president of the Milwaukee-based company. “We realized worker’s compensation should be managed, not watched. That commitment and resulting culture of safety has paid off year after year as our mod rate has consistently gone down, reflecting our lack of on-the-job injuries.”
That means projects are not delayed due to injuries, and that Lagina Plumbing can provide its services more efficiently.
“Our mod rate, which is significantly below the industry base, is a real testimony to the quality of our workforce,” Lagina said. “They are not only great plumbers, they are smart workers. The fact that we’ve gone four and one-half years without a lost-time injury is incredible.”
As part of its safety program, each Lagina plumber holds an OSHA 10 card, reflecting 10 hours of safety training.
