Lagina Plumbing Recognized for Role in LEED Designation for Milwaukee City Hall Complex
Sept. 17 , 2009 -- Milwaukee’s City Hall Complex has been honored for its energy and resource efficiency. The complex has earned a Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Lagina Plumbing of Milwaukee was recognized for its contribution to the designation, which was announced at the Sustainability and Energy Efficiency (SE2) conference presented by the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance.
“We’re honored to be part of the restoration and remodeling of City Hall in work that helped make the complex more resource-efficient,” said Jim Lagina, president of the commercial plumbing company.
The complex includes the historic City Hall building, the Zeidler Municipal Building and the 809 Building -- a combined 666,446 square feet of space.
Paul Fredrich, facilities manager for the city, said efforts to improve energy efficiency in the city hall complex have been ongoing for decades, and gained momentum during a major interior renovation in the mid-1990s.
“This really started probably 15 or so years ago, before ‘sustainability’ was even in our vocabulary, or ‘LEED’ or ‘green’ or anything,” said Fredrich.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told SE2 conference attendees that, “Thirty or 40 years ago, the environmental movement was viewed as an enemy of the economic movement. What has happened has truly been a transformation. Environmental concerns and business are not enemies; in fact, they are powerful, powerful allies.”
The LEED certification was in the Existing Buildings category for Operations and Maintenance. The complex earned a Silver rating, having gained 45 of a possible 92 LEED points.
